Emerging & Advancing Space Technologies
Many emerging and advancing technologies show considerable potential to influence our efforts in space. Some of these technologies, like nanotechnology, are still emerging and the ways in which they will support space development aren't totally clear yet. Other technologies like robotics and plasma engineering have clear applications but require further development to be fully realized. Our organization is watching these technologies closely and considering concepts for how these technologies and systems might be applied to support the human space effort.
NanotechnologyWe are very interested in the ways in which the emergence of nanotechnology will influence the development of new materials and surface treatments with unique properties suitable for space application. We are working on understanding how nanotechnology can be applied to the human push into space. It is likely that many advanced materials and electronics for space will rely on developments in nanotechnology. Nanotechnology also has longer-term potential for space-based medical applications. Advanced MaterialsSpace will require the development of a variety of new materials with specific properties. The unique environments we'll encounter will require light-weight and very strong materials. Further, those materials must not degrade upon exposure to the various environments of space. Radiation hardening, specific thermal properties, resistance to the space environment, and strength against micrometeorite collisions will all be major factors to consider.
Robotics & Remote OperationsThe field of robotics is advancing rapidly and robots will be regular parts of our lives in short order. In space robots will serve to conduct research, explore, prepare sites, and complete tasks too dangerous for humans. Robotic and remotely controlled systems will play a critical role in preparing sites for human operations and occupation. Robots will be a key technology for resource acquisition and utilization, and well as scientific exploration. The Institute for Space Development Research believes that the development of advanced robotics for space is critical to any long term human space presence and is researching opportunities in this regard.
We hope you'll consider contributing or donating to the non-profit efforts of the Institute for Space Development Research. Our work supports the effort to explore and develop the near-Earth environment for the benefit of Earth and humanity, research human settlement and space-based resource acquisition, and remove barriers for private industry while creating technical jobs, economic opportunity, and supporting the next generation. |
